Palinological and Paleosoil Investigations at Archaeological Sites: Analysis of Possibilities, and Working Methods

The paper considers properties and specificity of pursuing spore-and-pollen and paleosoil investigations at archaeological sites. Subject to analysis being possibilities using these methods for reconstruction of landscape and climatic conditions, specification of environmental characteristics, level of anthropogenic load, temporal tra-cing of changes in the system of land use, checking a stratigraphic and planigraphic situation, and substantiating sites’ dating. The article quotes working methods and algorithm of an independent sampling at archaeological sites.

Animal Husbandry in Beryozovo (XVII c.)

The article correlates osteological data from excavations of Beryozovo hillfort (XVI–XVIII cc., Low Ob basin). Subject to consideration being a quantity and quality composition of faunal remains, with domination of domestic ungulates’ bones, together with bird and fish bones. It was cattle and swine breeding staying as leading branches in the animal husbandry. The author indicates a proportional increase of swine osteal remains and a respective cattle proportional decrease, taking place in Beryozovo during XVII c.

Game and Domestic Animals in the Household Activity with the Population of Ust’-Vojkar Hillfort (XIV – XIX cc.)

The article describes hunting activity and keeping of domestic animals with the population of Ust’-Vojkar hillfort (XIV–XIX cc.). It is shown that during the whole period the basis of the household activity with the population was reindeer hunting and fishing. Hunting was done primarily in autumn and winter period. The significance of domestic animals in the household of the population was ever minimal.

White-Tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) from Ust’-Poluj Site

The article give a description of osteal pathology with the white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) from excavations of Ust’-Poluj site referring to the Kulaj community of the Early Iron Age (West Siberia, estuary of Poluj, territory of Salekhard). Pathologies were found on 5 of 244 bones: mandibula, ulna, tibiotarsus and tarsometatarsus. Character of deformations makes it possible to assume that some birds were kept in captivity.
