Population and reindeer breeding in Yamal according to census of 1932–1933

For the first time, data of a regional census in Yamal region in 1932–1933 was introduced into scientific circulation, considering its program, details of taking, and results. Under taking the census by means of local administrative and economic organizations in the period when a conflict between Nenets and Russians in Yamal was about to happen, it became clear that there was a suspicious attitude towards the census on the part of the nomads. It is determined that during the census they registered over half the Yamal regional population. The data was confirmed by that of subsequent censuses, demonstrating predominance of minor and medium reindeer households, together with the fact that the native population was principally occupied by fishing in the South, and by reindeer breeding in the North of Yamal where the biggest reindeer herds and rich reindeer breeders were concentrated.
