Russian borrowings in traditional culture of Alaska native people: a cultural shift and its influence upon ethnicity
The article is devoted to problems of borrowing cultural traditions by Alaska native people, basing on analysis of expedition materials by L.A. Zagoskin in 1841–1843, as well as on field materials by the author collected during his expedition, tracing L.A. Zagoskin, in 2009. In the 1940s, one fixed a rapid process of borrowing everyday elements from Russian culture by the native people. Dissemination of the Orthodox faith and rootedness tended to principally change cultural patterns in the life of the local tribes. An active life of the borrowings was fixed by the author at the modern stage as well (in the language, spiritual culture and in elements of everyday life, i.e. buildings, burial places, clothing, and others). A number of communities believe the Orthodox faith to be the basis of their identity. Thus, in the diachrony one observes a process of changing a cultural paradigm with no loss of ethnic identity. Moreover, the borrowed elements tend to become its basis.
