Summary

This article presents the results of a study of pottery production practices among the Bronze Age population of the Duvanskoye XVII site, located in the Tura-Pyshma interfluve (subtaiga Trans-Urals). The principal ceramic assemblage of the site — comprising approximately 300 vessels — is contextually attributed to the Fedorovo culture. Moreover, the assemblage includes a small group of ceramics exhibiting affinities with the Cherkaskul and Bishkul types. Based on ornamentation, two groups of vessels (A and B) have been identified within the assemblage. Their decorative repertoire features indicator signs, including meanders, geometric patterns, monotonous borders of stamp impressions, and bolsters. The technological study encompassed a sample of 81 vessels, representative of all identified groups, and was conducted within the framework of the historical-cultural approach and methodology developed by A.A. Bobrinsky. Comparative analysis of the obtained data revealed similarities in pottery production techniques between the potters responsible for Group A vessels and those who produced subgroups 1 and 3 of Group B. In contrast, the potters who created items with ornamentation reflecting Cherkaskul cultural traditions (subgroup 2 of Group B) demonstrated distinct approaches at the level of conceptualizing the original plastic raw material. It is hypothesized that the population of Duvanskoye XVII was heterogeneous, with origins in adjacent regions of the Middle Urals. The materials from the site correspond to the late phase of the Fedorovo cultural tradition and reflect the formation of the Andro-noid cultures (Cherkaskul and Pakhomovo).
